I just got my results back yesterday and learned I passed! Not too bad, either. Everything this post says is still true, except that in each part of the written section they select (or in one case let you select) two WIDA levels to differentiate for. You don't have to differentiate for every level.

Here's how I studied:
1) As I went through the multiple choice sample questions, I researched any topics that came up that I didn't feel familiar with. I would disagree with the OP about the laws - I don't feel like it makes much difference to study them. There are only a few questions on them and as long as you know the other material, it won't affect you.
2) I studied the WIDA levels in all four domains really thoroughly. Really get familiar with what a student at that level is capable of, specifically in that domain. For example, an emerging student will benefit from sentence frames, but an expanding student is past that and would benefit more from a visual showing the ideas being compared (as a random example).
https://wida.wisc.edu/sites/default/files/resource/Interpretive-Guide.pdf
3) Someone else posted this woman's site: https://www.mrsjudyaraujo.com/retell/
Just skimming through her general notes was helpful to review a lot of the concepts around teaching ELL kids. She also provides a graphic organizer for the other essay questions. I used that to write out my answers to the other sections (which pearson does not provide sample answers for).
4) I studied the sample essay answer really, really closely. I was really challenged by the "discourse" part, where you need to look at the voice and grammatical structures of the text and name possible challenges for an ELL student. Page 35 of the pdf https://wida.wisc.edu/sites/default/files/resource/WIDA-ELD-Standards-Framework-2020.pdf
gives a better explanation of the discourse concept, as well as other overarching ideas of WIDA. I looked up the names of different grammatical structures to be able to name them, the different tenses being the most important.

I hope this comment is helpful to someone else! During the actual test, I used the scratch board a lot during the essay question, since you have to refer back to your learning objectives throughout the various sections. It just makes things a little easier to have it in front of you. It was so frustrating trying to find study guidance or support. I recommend reading through these posts and tailoring study plans to the suggestions. Somebody had outline the open response piece which was huge! Basically you must be prepared to write an SEI lesson plan which allows for differentiation for the ELL levels. If you go in with a good, solid idea of reading, writing, and vocabulary strategies - you will be okay. Of note - I used EVERY second of the 4 hours - there is no way I could have developed the lesson plan without having thought about what I would do for activities in advance. Be prepared to identify the vocabulary words contained in a text for each tier, 1-3. Include the 7 steps for vocabulary instruction. Choose a mentor text that is not in your field - that makes tiered vocabulary easier to identify. Multiple choice were often situational - as it says earlier in these posts - the ESOL MTEL practice test was greatly helpful in practicing answering these types of texts.
Good luck to all - I wish you the best!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05397499571175872509noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2495952636870177736.post-62244844370312729552018-08-11T16:49:04.850-04:002018-08-11T16:49:04.850-04:00I am currently reading Sheltered Content Immersi...I am currently reading Sheltered Content Immersion, watching videos, etc. I am thinking I may need to bone up on the MA specifics. Scaled score was 232 out of 240 (passing score). I was crushed! I put in about 30 hours of studying. What makes me so angry about this test is a) The state should not mandate that every teacher have the endorsement. Teachers currently employed in a district with 75% ELL definitely should. We have less that 2% in my district. b) DESE should provide a full practice exam like they do for all (most?) other exams. c) The time limit is crazy. When do educators plan a comprehensive lesson with assessements in 2.5-3 hours? I took about 3 hours and I had trouble at the end and had to skimp. d) There were alot of questions, in my opinion, about formal assessments that ESL teachers would do. I didn't study much about those because I wouldn't be giving those as the regular ed. teacher.
Maybe I don't test well. I have been teaching in public school for 25 years. This is the first MTEL I had to take. I've read that it's the most difficult one of all. No materials and little help from the DESE MTEL site. I should feel proud of my accomplishment at earning 77% on the test given that I am self taught. That's little consolation to me as I just studied a bzillion more hours for the re-take this afternoon. I created a Pinterest Board to organize study materials. Search for SEI MTEL Prep.
Good luck!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09217437641542288668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2495952636870177736.post-65722032446208601592018-06-07T18:03:58.595-04:002018-06-07T18:03:58.595-04:00I just took the test. I felt very prepared because...I just took the test. I felt very prepared because of all of the hints and resources on this website. I spent a couple of hours reviewing with Quizlets and another few hours studying sample mentor texts and responses and SEI Open response templates that others have suggested above. There were about 10-15 MC questions that I narrowed down to 50/50, and the others I think I answered correctly. The one piece of advice I have is to allow a full 2.5 hours to complete the open response. I spent too much time on the multiple choice and then completed my open response in about two hours. I felt like I had such a long time, but it flew by, and before I knew it, I was at the 30-minute warning and still had two sections to complete. I had to rush through the fifth part of the five-part open response because I was running out of time. I only answered two of the five assessment questions as a result. Hopefully that doesn't make me fail the test, because otherwise I think it went pretty well. If I had had only about 10 more minutes, I would've done much better. I wasted that time perseverating over little things in the first few sections. Also, if you go over the recommended 300 word limit, I think that's ok. I had 400 words or so for just about every section. Again, I went overboard, did more than I had to do, but then ran out of time in the end. Just be aware of the time passing and move on. Save editing for the end if there's time. Good luck!
Also, someone created and posted this above, and it was extremely helpful to me as a template with recommended wording for objectives and useful strategies.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-ziD5VXhenyjek7-N85bRGBfSElNft99AHbHiqH0GOw/edit?usp=sharingAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
